Foam Sclerotherapy

Foam sclerotherapy is a new technique to deliver the sclerosing agent to treat varicose veins. Earlier, large varicose veins were quite difficult to treat by using conventional sclerotherapy, and that method has a low success rate. Foam sclerotherapy has two different ways for treating varicose veins.

In the first technique, you can displace the blood from a damaged vein with the help of foam. With displacement of blood, the complete force of the sclerosing agent comes into contact directly with the walls of the vein for an unlimited time without any dilution.

The second method of foam sclerotherapy uses ultrasound imaging techniques. Through ultrasound imaging, the foam is noticeable, and you can easily track and guide the sclerosing agent to the target area. For large veins, you can use the foam along with an ultrasound machine.

The whole procedure involving foam sclerotherapy can take place in an office (clinic), and the session will last for around 30 to 40 minutes. Doctors inject a small amount of a sclerosing (ablating or sealing) agent into the vein with a tiny needle. It closes the problematic veins and allows the flow of blood to reroute to other healthy veins. The number of foam sclerotherapy sessions depends on the number of damaged veins.

Foam Sclerotherapy For Varicose Veins

Hence, the purpose of foam sclerotherapy is related to cosmetics. It eliminates all unattractive varicose or spider veins and also treats tiredness and heaviness of the legs.

There are several treatments available for every individual situation. Sometimes, a general cosmetic problem might end up being a serious, underlying problem. In such scenarios, other treatments like ambulatory phlebectomy or non-foam sclerotherapy might work better. Alternatively, you can also have laser ablation and radiofrequency ablation as solutions.

What to Expect After Foam Sclerotherapy

Experts recommend compression pads, bandage, and stockings after the foam sclerotherapy procedure for the first 5 days. After 5 days, you can remove the bandage and pads. You can wear the stockings for a further 7 days.

During those 7 days, you might remove the stocking to shower and sleeping at night, but keep wearing them while working. You can wear stockings for longer only if you find them comfortable, as they can help you. Keep your stocking safely after you are done using them. You may use them again if you have additional injections.

Also, walking and other general activities are a must for you. You can perform many normal activities without any problem, but if you still have concerns, please contact your doctor and visit websites for vein treatments. They will provide you necessary guidance about your pre and post foam sclerotherapy procedure.

Indeed, you can perform normal activities after this treatment, and you do not have to stay away from anything in particular. However, driving is not safe on the day the procedure is performed, because there is a possibility that you might experience visual disturbances.

Most doctors recommend walking twice a day during the first week of the procedure. In the first week after foam sclerotherapy, it would be better to avoid performing any rigorous lower-body exercise. Moreover, below are a few more things you must know about this procedure:

  • Most people require more than one treatment.
  • Currently, this procedure treats visible spider veins.
  • It does not stop the development of new spider veins.

Is Foam Sclerotherapy Safe?

There are different risks in every medical procedure that should be considered carefully before proceeding with a particular treatment. Since sclerotherapy is often used for treating cosmetics problems, doctors must explain all the untoward and dangerous side effects for their patients.

This procedure is not painless because it requires injections to insert under your skin. The tiny needles carry chemicals, and they inject those chemicals into your skin. Therefore, some chemicals (sclerosants) can cause more pain than others.

Post Treatment Care

Post-treatment care instructions advise patients to wear compression dressings for almost one to three weeks after treatment. They must pay a follow-up visit every two weeks to enable the flow of blood clots in larger veins, which can improve the appearance and the prognosis.

If you wear compression stockings for approximately 3 weeks, it will enhance the efficacy of sclerotherapy. Compression stockings will also improve the clinical vessel’s disappearance. Therefore, if you prefer not to wear the compression stockings, you increase the risk for complications.
