Vascular Surgery

vascular-vein-artery-system-human-treatment-nyc-03What is vascular surgery? The vascular or circulatory system is your body’s way of transporting oxygen and essential nutrients to different parts while taking away waste materials and carbon dioxide. It includes arteries carrying oxygen-rich blood from your heart and veins, bringing the deoxygenated blood back to the heart. A patient undergoes vascular surgery when they have a disease affecting the vascular system. These diseases mainly occur in the arteries, veins, or in the lymphatic system.

Vascular Diseases

vascular-disease-cosmetic-treatment--02Arterial diseases include Arteriosclerosis, the thickening, or hardening of the artery walls. This condition restricts blood flow to tissue and organs. Atherosclerosis is a specific type of Arteriosclerosis in which a build-up of fats and cholesterol blocks blood flow to the arteries. The aneurysm is another condition in which there are bulges in the blood vessels. If you do not seek treatment for these conditions, they can lead to a heart attack.

Similarly, many disorders can happen within the lymphatic system, as well. Lymphedema is a common condition that causes swelling of arm or leg because of lymphatic fluid accumulating in the vessels. Because the vascular system is so complex, complications can arise from anywhere.

Symptoms of Vascular Diseases

vascular-vein-system-body-medical-treatment-01Vascular diseases are common as people age. Most vascular diseases do not show symptoms at an early stage, and so people do not realize that they are suffering from any disease. If you experience any of these symptoms, you may have vascular disease or disorder that needs treatment. Varicose veins and spider veins are some of the common vein disorders in which veins become very apparent or form a spider-like pattern under the skin.

Peripheral Artery Disease

  • Hair loss on legs
  • Weakness and pain in legs
  • Lethargy
  • Numbness in legs
  • Brittle toenails, slow toenail growth
  • Shiny or pale blue appearance of leg
  • Ulcers or sores on the leg
  • Foot or leg may feel cold
  • Erectile Dysfunction

Aortic Aneurysm

  • Sudden back or abdominal pain
  • Sweaty skin
  • Pain spreading from abdomen to leg
  • Increased heart rate
  • Shock or unconsciousness

Types of Vascular Surgeries

Treatment of vascular diseases mainly includes surgical operating on the aorta, carotid arteries, and the lower body extremities: femoral, iliac, and tibial arteries. Vascular surgeries also involve treating Iliac vein compression syndrome and varicose vein. Common types of vascular surgeries include:

Interventional Radiology

Interventional Radiology is a diagnostic surgery that provides a minimally invasive image guide. This helps in correct diagnosing or treating vascular disease. If you have clear symptoms of vascular disease, your physician would suggest that you consult a vascular surgeon who will most likely ask you to have an Interventional Radiotherapy. There is a wide range of Interventional Radiology depending upon the vascular disease. Some involve opening and narrowing of blocked vessels using a balloon while others use metal stents. Other surgical options for IR include laser therapy and catheter-directed surgery.

Most patients leave the hospital after 24 hours of the surgery. However, if there is too much pain, you will need to stay. The recovery time is between one to two weeks. You will be able to continue your normal routine afterward, but make sure to take enough rest.

Endovenous Laser Treatment

endovenous-laser-vascular-evlt-treatment-nyc-04Endovenous Laser Treatment or EVLT is the latest vascular surgery option. It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure mainly for treating varicose veins. ELT is ultrasound-guided to treat abnormal veins. This procedure uses an optical laser injected minimally and diminishes the abnormal vein. ELT gives minimal pain and very quick recovery.

Open Aortic Surgery

Open aortic surgery or open aortic repair visualizes and controls aorta. This surgical procedure mainly treats aneurysm of the thoracic (chest) and abdominal arteries. Although the surgery is a little complicated and has a long recovery time, it is necessary when there is a risk of rupturing. The surgeon will open up the abdomen and puts a clamp on the aorta or below the aneurysm. The surgeon will cut and remove the aneurysm, replacing it with an artificial man-made aorta.

The part where there will be an incision will feel sore and pain. You will stay in the hospital for a few days to recover. The complete recovery will take around 4 to 6 weeks or even more. Within two to three weeks, you will be able to do your normal activities but do not lift heavy objects until your recovery completes.

Risks of Vascular Surgery

The risks of vascular surgeries are more or less similar. They include blood clotting, heart attack, and infection. Therefore, it is crucial to have vascular surgery from an experienced and certified vascular surgeon. Before surgery, you must stop taking any blood-thinning medication like aspirin. Tell your surgeon what other medication you are taking before the surgery.

Spider Vein Treatment: What You Should Know

spider-veins-picture-description-causes-treatments-nyc-05Do you need spider vein treatment? Perhaps you want to get rid of the spider veins that have appeared on your legs. The small bluish-purple vessels, i.e., the spider veins, on your legs not only affect your appearance but may also cause discomfort.

Spider veins are faulty veins smaller in size as compared to varicose veins. They may look blue, purple, or red. Spider veins are visible through the skin and may appear as thin webs or lines. For this reason, spider veins are also referred to as thread veins.

Symptoms

Both the spider veins and varicose veins may be forms of a venous disorder or venous insufficiency. Both conditions are likely to affect your leg veins more than the other veins in the body. Varicose veins are due to damaged valves in your large veins. Resulting in an increase venous pressure which may cause spider veins.

Other than their appearance, spider veins may cause slight discomfort, but not pain or heaviness in the legs.

Causes

Spider Veins on Legs

spider-vein-treatment-before-after-photos-pics-01Faulty veins are the main culprit for both varicose and spider veins. When the valves inside your veins stop working normally, spider veins can occur on superficial capillaries due to increased venous pressure. Veins are responsible for returning blood to the heart.

When the blood passes through a vein, the one-way valve inside the veins closes. The valve helps prevent blood from flowing in the wrong direction.

However, when this valve gets damaged, it becomes harder for the blood to flow in an upward direction. Thus, veins start collecting blood and over time, this can result in a venous bulge under the skin, varicose veins, and an increase in venous pressure resulting spider veins.

Spider veins, many times may occur without varicose veins as a result of hormones or congenital factors.

Spider Veins on the Face

spider-veins-face-treatment-before-after-treatment-02The sun’s ultraviolet rays damage blood vessels. When the tiny blood vessels running through your face burst, it may result in spider veins. Increased pressure on the face, such as due to vomiting, coughing, or sneezing, may also cause spider veins.

Causes that make you more susceptible to spider veins:

  • Your gender –women are more likely to have spider veins than men
  • The hormonal impact of puberty, pregnancy, and menopause
  • Also, the use of birth control pills or hormonal menopause treatments which weaken the vein
  • Advancing age causes the vein valves and skin to lose elasticity and get weaker
  • Damaged veins from previous blood clots can also affect the working of vein valve
  • Standing or sitting for a prolonged period makes the veins work harder to pump blood
  • 90% of people inherit spider veins from their family

Spider Vein Treatment

While spider veins are painless, you may wish to have them removed for cosmetic reasons.

Sclerotherapy

sclerotherapy-spider-vein-treatment-doctor-04Sclerotherapy is the most effective treatment for spider veins for the legs and face. It does not require anesthesia and can be performed in the surgeon’s office. During the procedure, the surgeon injects an irritant into the affected vein.

Sclerotherapy irritates the walls of the veins, causing them to stick together and eventually shrink and disappear.

For the best results, you may need several treatments. Your doctor may recommend wearing compression stockings for a few days after treatment. Spider veins will gradually disappear in 4 to 6 weeks.

Laser Treatment

You may visit a surgeon or dermatologist for laser treatment for your spider veins. During the process, the doctor directs the laser light at the spider veins to close them. Laser treatment is effective for for spider veins on the face smaller than 3 mm.

Usually laser treatment is not effective for spider veins on the legs, due to characteristics of the skin and the spider vein per se.

Laser Sclerotherapy

Laser Sclerotherapy is a combination of Sclerotherapy followed by laser at the same time. This combination enhances the Sclerotherapy treatment for faster results.

About The Vein Treatment Center (VTC)

The Vein Treatment Center © (VTC) was established in 1982 as a medical facility devoted exclusively to the treatment of varicose veins, spider veins, and related venous disorders.

Through a combination of treatment methods—EVLT, painless sclerotherapy, foam sclerotherapy, and mini-phlebectomy. The Vein Treatment Center treats venous problems and alleviates the symptoms of venous disease, with the goal of always achieving the best cosmetic results.

Luis Navarro MD, FACS, FACPh & The Vein Treatment Center

Dr-Navarro-vein-treatment-center-doctor-nycFounder and Medical Director Dr. Luis Navarro, established the Vein Treatment Center in 1982, making it one of the first and only facilities to exclusively dedicate its efforts to the treatment of venous disorders. Later, The Vein Treatment Center developed a treatment method which merges minimally invasive and noninvasive vein removal techniques to achieve maximum cosmetic results – Combined Therapies™. Combining treatments was not a common practice before The VTC popularized doing so, but is now the standard of treatment for varicose and spider veins worldwide.

In 2000, Dr. Luis Navarro developed and patented the Endovenous Laser Ablation Technique (EVLT). This minimally invasive procedure is performed in-office under local anesthesia requires only a tiny nick in the skin. Patients are up on their feet immediately following procedure with no downtime and no scarring. The EVLT procedure modernized the field of phlebology by making traditional surgery for varicose veins obsolete, avoiding hospitalization and general anesthesia as well as large incisions and long recoveries. EVLT has since been adopted by physicians all over the world.

Since 2012, The Vein Treatment Center has been improving sclerotherapy, the oldest and most known treatment for spider and small varicose veins. The staff at The VTC uses cryotherapy (cold bursts of air) to numb the skin while performing the sclerotherapy treatment, for an overall painless experience and increased patient comfort. With this new innovative method, the number of injections can be increased multiple times per session, for faster and better aesthetic results.

Luis Navarro, M.D., FACS, FACPh, leads a team of highly specialized and Board Certified physicians, certified physician assistants, and medical support staff in the diagnosis and treatment of venous disease.

Our Philosophy

vein-treatment-center-nyc-office-pic“The goal of The Vein Treatment Center is to treat varicose and spider veins, in order to achieve the fastest and best cosmetic result with minimal discomfort.”

Since 1982, The Vein Treatment Center has been specializing only in the treatment of varicose and spider veins. With that in mind, we do not perform other cosmetic work, vascular, or general surgery.

Most of our patients seek treatment because their varicose or spider veins represent a cosmetic issue, that are unsightly and patients want them removed. Nevertheless, varicose vein above a certain size and symptomatology may also be considered a medical problem, though it hardly ever becomes a serious medical issue or results in venous insufficiency.
